"The book is full of emotion and creativity, which I tried to translate into the design"
(Prague) - Graphic designer and musician Jan Mašín (35) recently took over the design for The Bartender's Travelling Book. As part of the 15-year anniversary of the unique traveling book, he has created a unique collage of images from the records of bar masters that adorn the interiors of bars and the homes of bar enthusiasts in Europe and the US. And now he presents Finally a Bar T-Shirt, another merch in support of the book.
What inspired you to design the t-shirt?
I was mainly inspired by the recipes themselves, their variety and the associated colourful drinks that form the core of Bartender's Travelling Book. This book is full of emotion and creativity, which I tried to translate into the design.
How do you feel about handwritten texts from bar greats?
I see the lyrics as something extremely authentic and personal. Each recipe, signature, note carries not only creativity but also the unique personality of the author. I'm excited about it. Adam has come up with a great concept that has taken hold, the idea of the book is coming true literally and to the letter, and I'm very happy for that.
"I was inspired by street art, pop art by Andy Warhol"
Can it be a kind of art in our modern times?
It is true that many things are considered art nowadays. And I think - why not? The most beautiful thing about art is its freedom and openness. What appeals to one may not resonate with another, but everyone can find what they enjoy.

The result is pastel colors. Very crazy. Punk. You didn't go over the line on the traditional stuff?
The line isn't a wall (laughs) .. Maybe he did, maybe he didn't - that's for everyone to judge. But I think it's important in art and design to break out and try something new sometimes. I believe that design will find its fans, but also its detractors - and that's okay.
Where does a designer get the inspiration to create something special?
Specifically here, I was very influenced by street art and pop art, especially the works of Andy Warhol, who was not afraid to work with bold colours and unconventional approaches. In general, I think inspiration is all around us - just keep your eyes open, whether you're on the street, in nature or in a bar, life is really colourful there.
So finally a bar t-shirt?
Absolutely! I like the connection of a story that has been going on for 15 years. It's controversial, yet at the same time very emotional and creative. I'm glad I could be there. Just enjoy!
